Design of Natural Area Preserves in Hawai'i
نویسنده
چکیده
Preserves, especially in Hawai!, must be protectable and manageable. Elements in preserve design include defining objectives, determining minimal area requirements, identifying external threats, and identifying management activities to be conducted. Biological, economic, and social priorities must be considered. There is no substitute for detailed ecological knowledge and practical experience, but ecological compromises are essential. Land use on surrounding areas, successional processes, and life expectancies of preserves must be seriously considered, as well as special problems such as large or migratory animals. In Hawaii, threats from introduced organisms, destruction and fragmentation of native ecosystems, and the abundance of rare taxa make decisions about preserve objectives and design especially critical. Intensive management of established preserves and accumulation of sufficient knowledge to accomplish this effectively and efficiently are crucial.

Lesions resembling knemidokoptic mange on the feet and tarsometatarsi of two Hawai'i' Amakihi (Hemignathus virens) were observed while the researchers were mist-netting wild passerines at Manuka Natural Area Reserve on the island of Hawai'i between 14 June 2007 and 19 June 2007. During subsequent mist-netting from September 2007 through February 2008, we found 26% (7/27) of the Hawai'i' Amakihi...

متن کاملToward Ethical Treatment of Animals in Hawai'i's Natural Areas!
Human alienation from nature is evidenced by minimal understanding of interrelationships in the wild and an emphasis on individual wild animals. Different viewpoints (utilitarian, biocentric, and theocentric) about the natural world and the place of humans in it color ideas about management of natural areas and the species therein. Decisions about nature should consider a complex of human value...

In 2002, quantitative phototransect surveys documenting coral community structure off three coastal resorts in Hawai'i were repeated to produce long-term data sets of 12 to 22 yr duration. At the first site, in Honolua Bay off the Kapalua Resort on Maui, a runoff event from surrounding pineapple fields following a winter storm in early 2002 deposited sediment on the inner reef that remained in ...
